Maria Montessori was born in Italy in 1870. She was a woman of the future, she had a vision and her vision was to direct children in developing their ability to absorb information, to teach them independence along with respect for others and their environment. She became the first woman in Italy to become a physician and through her work she came in contact with children and discovered that all children have the same ability to ‘absorb’ knowledge once it is imparted to them. She opened up a school where she introduced puzzles and exercises she developed for the children. There was world-wide interest in her school and so more were set up. Her method was so successful that Montessori schools are now run in most countries.
